Mens Season 2011

2011 presented a different challenge for the Celts as a club, after the euphoria of previous year it was always going to be difficult to maintain the momentum. Changes of management in the Mens team and the loss of key players on both A and B panels meant this year was always going to be somewhat of a transition period.

The summer started as usual with the Boot Camp beginning in scorching heat of July and continued through to August when most men were back to their full complement when the Summer dodgers, A.K.A The teachers, returned from their breaks. The Celts did manage to pick up some new recruits with Barry Canavan, nephew of Peter, filling in the spot left by fellow red hander Gareth McDermott and Shane Rackard, from the famous Rackard clan in Wexford, coming in to add some extra bulk to midfield.

This year the Celts have moved their training and tournaments to the Jebel Ali centre of excellence which boats state of the art grass and all weather pitches. The first round of the Middle East league was played there in late September and was notable for the amount of injuries to key players more than anything else. The Men's B team made it as far as the semis and the Mens A team were unlucky to be beaten in the finals.

Training continued with the Asian Gaelic Games in Seoul, South Korea, coming shortly after that. Despite both men's panels being decimated with injuries the lads still managed to go out and put decent performance both falling at the penultimate hurdle once again. The tournament was noticeable for holding the first Asian camogie match in which many of the Celts girls participated in. Darragh McGreevy the Celts senior goalkeeper also won and All Star, as did Alan Hogan in the hurling.

The competition continued with the now notorious Bahrain tournament being held in Mid November. The men A were unlucky to lose out to Qatar in the final despite dominating much of the game.

Next up is the Qatar tournament where the Celts will be looking to get one over on their rivals on their home patch.
